ASH CONFERENCE 2011
36th Annual General Meeting of Australian Society of Herpetologists
November 8 -11, 2011, Paluma, North Queensland

Travel: The next ASH meeting will be held at Paluma Village, located 92 km north of Townsville, Queensland in the Paluma Range (880 m asl). We are arranging buses to leave from the Townsville airport and drive meeting participants to Paluma and back. You will be able to book and pay for bus transportation with your registration. Alternatively, you may want to rent a car and make the 1.5 hour drive to Paluma on your own. Note that Paluma Village is very isolated; mobile phone access is limited, and there are no shops or other facilities aside from a small café.

Environment:  Paluma Village is surrounded by rainforest habitat. If you head west towards Hidden Valley, the habitat changes from rainforest to wet sclerophyll and finally dry sclerophyll habitat. This habitat mosaic sustains a wide diversity of vertebrates, including may reptile and frog species that are endemic to north Queensland. Local attractions include lookouts, rainforest walks, swimming in cold mountain streams, bird watching, and picnic facilities.

Accommodation: Most conference attendees will be staying at Gumburu (the Catholic Environmental Education Centre) or at the Paluma Queensland Education Centre. Both are located within walking distance of each other (10 minutes) and provide ‘school camp’ style accommodation of bunk rooms (2 or 4 to a room). Meals will be included in the registration for those staying at Gumburu or the Paluma Education Centre.

If you wish to arrange your own accommodation, there are two options in Paluma Village: (1) the Rainforest Inn Paluma, 1 Mt Spec Road, Paluma, QLD 4816 (07) 4770 8688, http://www.rainforestinnpaluma.com/ or (2) self-contained holiday cottages (see for example http://www.palumarainforest.com.au/stay_selfcontained.htm). Although camping is available at Lake Paluma Campground (located ~20 minute drive west of Paluma Village), at the present time this area is closed due to cyclone damage. However, it may be open again before the conference. Contacts are available at http://www.palumarainforest.com.au/stay_camping.htm.

Meals: For folks staying at Gumburu or the Paluma Education centre, all meals are included (breakfast, lunch, dinner and morning/afternoon tea). Please note that we have limited ability to cater meals, so people arranging their own accommodation will not be included in the meal plan, and must self-cater (you will need to shop in Townsville before coming to Paluma, as there is no shopping in Paluma).

The Rainforest Inn has a high end restaurant, which is the only restaurant nearby. The conference dinner will be included in everyone’s registration, and we will feed everyone for that meal.

What to Bring: You will need a fitted sheet (for the mattress) or sleeping bag, a pillow and pillow slip, and bedding (we recommend a light-to medium-weight sleeping bag). It can be very hot at Paluma in November, but it can also be very cool and really, really rainy and muddy. We recommend a raincoat, a light jumper, insect repellent, and sunscreen. Gumboots might be good.
