Fairbridge Village, Western Australia
About the conference
Meetings of the Australian Society of Herpetologists occur approximately every 12-18 months, usually in picturesque locations far removed from cities, wifi and cafes selling smashed avocado toast. Our 45th 'ASH conference' will be held at Fairbridge Village in Western Australia from June 20-23 2017, Fairbridge was established in 1912 as a farm school for war orphans, but is now better known for the Fairbridge World Music Festival and the setting of a new feature film directed by Ben Elton. Delegates will be housed on-site in heritage cottages, and plenary talks will be given in a chapel (a first for an ASH meeting, we think).
Confirmed plenary speakers are Dr Paul Doughty, Dr Sabrina Fossette, Dr Renee Catullo, and Professor Rick Shine. In addition to a packed scientific programme, which features a symposium in honour of Professor Mike Bull, there will be the extraordinarily difficult herpetological quiz night hosted by Dr Glenn Shea, a team race involving inscrutable obstacles to overcome (mental and physical), and a conference dinner featuring the African/roots band Shangara Jive.
Fairbridge is just over an hour’s drive from Perth Airport, so if you are coming from the eastern states hop on an early flight to Perth on June 20, and you will be in time for the bus. Buses will leave the domestic and international airport terminals between 1-3pm, to coincide with arriving flights.
Winter is the breeding season for many frogs in the south-west, and there are plenty of herps to be found at Fairbridge and surrounds. You can even sign up for a free frogging tour with none other than Emeritus Professor Dale Roberts.
A provisional programme is available now, but it may change once conference presentations have been finalised.
